Herz vs Ohm

Resonance breathing that goes where you go.

Herz and the Ohm Resonance Lamp share an idea: breathe slowly, at the pace your heart answers most, and let live feedback guide you there. Ohm builds it into a lamp for your bedside. Herz puts it on the iPhone and Apple Watch you already carry, so a calmer breath is there before a meeting, on a train, or in bed.

It runs from a USB-C cable to the wall, and its stone works only with the lamp. Herz weighs nothing more than the phone in your pocket.

Size

One stays on the nightstand. One comes with you.

Ohm is a beautiful object, made to live in one room. The lamp is 135 mm across and 181 mm tall, with an 80 g sensing stone you hold through the session, and it needs mains power.

Herz runs on your iPhone, and on Apple Watch it can lead a whole session at your wrist, with the pace set by the Digital Crown. Wherever you happen to need ten slow minutes, it is already there.

Herz compared with the Ohm Resonance Lamp
Compared on Herz Ohm Resonance Lamp
Price Edge: Herz Free to breathe with. Herz Plus is $39.99 a year after a 7-day free trial, or $7.99 a month, or $99.99 once. It works with the Apple Watch or chest strap you already own. $350 for the lamp and stone. HSA and FSA eligible.
Where you can use it Edge: Herz Anywhere: your iPhone, or Apple Watch on its own. At a desk, on a train, in bed, before a hard call. Where the lamp is plugged in. The stone works only with the lamp, and Ohm says portability is “something we’re exploring”.
Getting one Edge: Herz A download from the App Store, coming soon. Nothing to ship or wait for. Ships to the US only. Release No. 1 has sold out; Release No. 2 is “opening soon”, with a waitlist.
What else you need Edge: Ohm An iPhone on iOS 17 or later. To see your heart answer, an Apple Watch or a Bluetooth chest strap. Without one, the guided breath still works. Nothing: the lamp, stone and power cord are in the box. A phone app is optional.
Heart sensor Edge: Herz Your choice: Apple Watch, or any chest strap using the standard Bluetooth heart-rate service, such as the Polar H10, which reports every beat. An optical (PPG) sensor in the stone, read through your palm. You hold the stone for the whole session.
Finding your pace Even A 17-minute assessment tries six paces, from 7 down to 4.5 breaths a minute, and shows you a scored table of how your heart answered each. The strongest becomes your pace. The lamp reads your signals and adjusts its breathing cadence in real time to guide you toward resonance.
During a session Even A breathing stone to follow, your heart rate drawn live against the breath, haptics in your hand, and Ocean, River or Wind. Five to twenty minutes. Light that rises and falls, sound and gentle pulses in the stone. The lamp turns from yellow to blue when you reach resonance. Three minutes by default.
Screens Edge: Ohm Haptics and sound let you breathe with your eyes closed and your phone face down, but a phone or watch runs it. No screen at all. Light, sound and touch guide you.
Progress Edge: Herz Built in: the days you practised, how your heart followed the pace over weeks, and a resting baseline. Sessions can be saved to Apple Health as mindful minutes. In the optional companion app, which Ohm’s quick-start guide lists as coming soon.
Privacy Edge: Herz No account. The app makes no network connections of its own; everything stays on your iPhone. No account needed, and heart data is stored on the lamp. Create an account and session data syncs, encrypted, to Ohm’s cloud.
Sharing Edge: Ohm One person per iPhone. Several people in a home or office can use the same lamp.
In your home Edge: Ohm An app. Linen by day and Ember by night keep it easy on tired eyes. A hand-blown glass lamp that is part of the room when you’re not breathing with it.

Which is for you

Choose the one you’ll use.

  • Choose Herz

    If calm has to travel

You want a session before a meeting, on a commute or in a hotel room, not only at home. You already have an iPhone, and perhaps an Apple Watch or a chest strap. You want to find your own pace and see it measured, and keep everything on your phone.

  • Choose Ohm

If you want no screen at all

You practise in one place, usually beside your bed or chair, and want an object in the room rather than an app. You’d rather nothing else to set up, or want several people in your home to share one device.

  • Either way

    The breath is the same

Both guide resonance breathing, slow and steady at around five to seven breaths a minute, with feedback from your heart. What helps most is coming back to it day after day.
